Banyan Tree Sanctuary, located at 1100' on the western slope of Hualalai volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, is a vegan lovers paradise. The owners are all 100% vegan (for a total of almost 20 years) and ask all their guests to adopt a vegan lifestyle while they stay there. Many of their guests have been so moved by their experience and the love and care that they receive, that they have become vegans as well! The feeling of vibrancy when you first enter the property and see the huge banyan tree in the center of the circular driveway has a very calming effect. The tone for your experience is set with the sign "Place of Meditation", seen as you enter the property. All the partners meditate regularly, and follow the path of Ahimsa – do no harm. However, this is not a silent retreat or austere environment at all. There is music, and dance, and a frisbee golf course, as well as a saltwater chlorine-free pool and Jacuzzi, and an infrared sauna for all the guests to enjoy.

The Sanctuary has vacation rentals as well as various retreats throughout the year; which range from yoga, to dance, art therapy, music, chi gong, dolphin encounters, breath-work, etc.

Banyan Tree Sanctuary is a holistic and sustainable model of living harmoniously with the earth, with a very light carbon footprint, and giving back as much as possible. Incorporating composting, grey water, catchment, use of recycled materials, solar power, and of course recycling and reusing as many items as they can. Even their shared vehicle is a hybrid Prius with the license plate “MOTHER”.
